"5G will usher in a new era of mobile connectivity, allowing people to connect to data, experiences and other in ways never thought possible", said Brian Higgins, Vice President, Wireless Device and Product Marketing at Verizon.

Although this seems to contradict the announcement at the Snapdragon Tech Summit 2018 that rival Chinese brand OnePlus would be the first to offer a smartphone with SD85 and 5G, it could simply be the fact that Xiaomi could be the first to sell in China, and OnePlus globally.

Mr Katouzian said the Snapdragon 855 will ship with an updated neural engine for AI-related tasks and improved gaming capabilities, adding that the new chip, which has an ultra-efficient 7-nanometer design, will also ship with an LTE modem on board.

He said that the full chip systems will be able to switch between 4G and 5G and will support both millimetre-wave and sub-6 gigahertz bands, the two frequency spectrums used by 5G networks.

U.S. telecom carrier Verizon and Samsung have announced to jointly launch one of the first commercial 5G smartphones in the USA in the first half of 2019.

New sensor got the name of the 3D Sonic Sensor.

Samsung Electronics has cooperated with two US companies, Qualcomm Technologies and Verizon, to carry out a successful joint test of 5G New Radio (NR) data connection by using a test phone, opening the way for the commercial service of 5G smartphones.

"Today marks a massive and exciting step forward underscoring how Qualcomm Technologies and ecosystem leaders are driving 5G commercialization, a journey that went from R&D, accelerated standardization and trials, the launch of innovative products and technologies, to the imminent launch of 5G networks and smartphones across the globe starting in early 2019", said Amon at yesterday's event. We'll be bringing you more details as the situation becomes clearer.
