Jeep Gladiator is the Pickup Outdoor Enthusiasts Want

The "Gladiator" name also makes a return to Jeep's stable as the American brand sold another pickup truck back in the 1960's with the same name.

Like the Wrangler, the Gladiator will be hugely customisable even before you get to loading it up with Mopar accessories and performance mods. The Gladiator name lasted through the 1960s but was dropped for the 1972 model year. There isn't a huge amount to separate the two Sport versions, but Overland is designed as a plusher, leather-bound country prowler while Rubicon (like the Wrangler it's based on) is the extreme off-road version. The new models are equipped with LEDs daytime running lights, which form a halo around the outside perimeter of the headlights.

The load bed itself features a lighting system (positioned beneath the rails) and a 400W external power source, and buyers can opt for Jeep's "Trail Rail" cargo management system for organising and securing items.

Being Wrangler-based it also offers the very best 4x4 systems that Jeep has to offer (Command-Trac and Rock-Trak), as well as Tru-Lock electrically operated front and rear axle lockers, a Trac-Lock limited slip differential and sway-bar disconnector. Under the bed is a full-size spare wheel well that can take up to a 35-inch tyre.

A diesel option will arrive in 2020 but it will only be available with the automatic transmission. The seatbacks also fold flat and there is another storage area between the rear of the cab and the seatbacks. An appropriate toolkit is included, and stamped into each hinge is the size of the Torx bit required to loosen its bolts. It also features ESS (Engine Stop-Start) as standard equipment.

Cloth or leather contoured seats support adjustable bolster and lumbar support. Available comfort features include heated front seats and steering wheel.

On the inside, the Gladiator comes with a 7.0-inch LED information display and an 8.4-inch infotainment touchscreen with smartphone connectivity.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility is a neat touch on a rufty-tufty off-roader like this, as are five USB ports and a forward-facing off-road camera that can show you what you couldn't hope to see from the driver's seat. The fourth-generation Uconnect system enhances the user interface and system performance with quicker startup times and improved screen resolution.
