A U.S. man stole a small plane and flew it into his own home following an argument with his wife.

Hours later, at 12:30 a.m., Youd called and asked a patrol officer be present at his house to "keep the peace" as he picked up belongings and his truck, officials said.

Youd was arrested Sunday after witnesses saw him assault his wife, Sandoval said.

Youd and his wife bought the house, valued at almost US$400,000, in 2016 in a quiet subdivision of new homes near the foothills, county property records show.

Most of the home was still intact but the front was badly damaged from the impact and resulting fire.

Mr Youd and his wife bought the 251-square metre house valued at almost $US400,000 ($550,065) in 2016 in a quiet subdivision of new homes near the foothills, county property records show.

An earlier mugshot of Duane Youd. He was an experienced pilot, she added. He flew for VanCon, a construction company that owned the plane.

"We don't know what his ultimate goal is, whether he meant to hit it low like he did or he meant to hit it higher", Sandoval said.

According to The Salt Lake Tribune, Youd's 17-year-old son from a previous marriage, Parker Youd, who was not home at the time of the attack, said his father gave no indication of doing what he did.

While the plane departed from an airport in Utah, authorities would not specify which one.

Within hours, Youd was taking off in the plane from the Spanish Fork-Springville Airport about 25km north of his house.

His wife and a child who were present at the time survived the blast, Sergeant Noemi Sandoval said.

The crash happened at a home on East Canyon Road at 2:38 a.m. Monday, KTLA sister station KSTU reported.

The National Transportation Safety Board was investigating the incident and was expected to issue a report within the week.

Court records show Youd had previously been charged with disorderly conduct after a domestic violence incident in April, and was released on probation and ordered to attend counseling.

Youd's suicidal deathcharge was the second such incident in recent days.
