A go-private deal at $420 a share announced by Musk in an August 7 tweet would have wiped out short bets against Tesla and hidden the company's financials from the public eye.

A spokesman for Tesla declined to comment on short-sellers, who are often dubbed "haters" by Musk's supporters on Twitter. "He was offered free legal services", he wrote. He wrote: "Did you investigate at all?"

But Musk's decision to continue to respond to critics on Twitter indicates he won't change easily, said Charles Elson, a University of DE finance professor who specializes in corporate governance.

"Nonetheless, his actions against me do not justify my actions against him, and for that I apologize to Mr. Unsworth and to the companies I represent as leader", Musk tweeted.

In a series of back-and-forth tweets with a Twitter user named Yoda, Musk asked: "You don't think it's odd he hasn't sued me?"

While Tesla shares spiked the day of Musk's August 7 tweet, they have since fallen around 9 percent as concerns grow over Musk's leadership.

In a statement, Hansen claims Tesla also told him not to disclose or pursue other sensitive matters, including the alleged theft of more than $37 million in copper and other raw materials from the company's factory between January and June. Musk said in a tweet last week that he was no longer pursuing a plan to privatize Tesla.

Jill Fisch, a co-director for University of Pennsylvania Law School's Institute for Law and Economics, said that Musk's use of social media to share important information is increasingly common among technology executives, particularly those on the West Coast. "Most of my time is spent. going round the [Tesla] factory. and if I'm not here I'm at the Giga [battery] factory in Nevada".

"The reason Elon seems to attract drama is that he is so transparent, so open, in a way that can come back to bite him", said Kimbal Musk.

The eccentric billionaire may have recently parted ways with his new girlfriend Grimes in the wake of rapper Azealia Banks claiming that some weird stuff had gone down at Musk's Los Angeles mansion over a weekend she had been invited.

"He doesn't know how to do it differently".

"If [the latest tweet] adversely affects the share price then Tesla's board members may feel duty bound to do something about it".
