Mexico elections center on disgust with corruption, violence

U.S. President Donald Trump, congratulated Lopez Obrador Sunday on Twitter: "Congratulations to Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on becoming the next President of Mexico". That's where the similarities with his counterpart north of the border end.

"There is much to be done that will benefit both the United States and Mexico!" tweeted the US Republican leader, whose anti-trade, anti-immigration policies have plunged bilateral ties between the neighbors to a historic low.

Much remains to be determined about how Lopez Obrador's often nebulous campaign proposals will manifest themselves in government.

"We are not going to fight". That is what we always want to maintain with the USA government, that there be mutual respect. In reality, Mexico has always been respectful of Trump and the US government.

Presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador waves to supporters as he arrives to Mexico City's main square, the Zocalo, Sunday, July 1, 2018. Newspaper El Financiero's exit poll gave him 49 percent of the vote to 27 percent for Anaya and 18 percent for Meade.

Lopez Obrador plans to eschew the presidential mansion tucked into Mexico City's verdant Chapultepec park, preferring to remain at his modest home on the capital's south side and working from offices in the colonial National Palace downtown.

This is Lopez Obrador's third bid for the presidency and some see it as his best shot after 12 years of near-permanent campaigning.

"More broadly, Mexico has been governed by a centre-right technocratic elite since 1982".

He said contracts obtained under energy reforms passed under President Enrique Pena Nieto will be scrutinized for any corruption or illegality, but otherwise contracts will be honored.

Opponents of Obrador, have recognized their defeat and Obrador's victory in the election.

"We will eradicate corruption in Mexico", Obrador told journalists on late Sunday, as quoted by the TV Azteca broadcaster.

Lopez Obrador is a twice-spurned populist whose supporters hope he will deliver on promises to clean up corruption, reign in spiraling violence and lift millions out of poverty.

Lopez Obrador won thanks to overwhelming anger at the status quo and his success at presenting himself as an agent of change.

Mexican presidents are limited by law to a single term.

But Mexican attitudes towards the United States changed significantly in the 1990s. At a Los Angeles rally a year ago, AMLO said that "the wall and the demagoguery of patriotism are no match for the dignity and humanity of the American people".

"We can bring a voice to the poor and marginalized, we can bring change, we can win".

The elections have significance for the United States as well.

Lopez Obrador, the former mayor of Mexico City, won 53 percent of the vote on Sunday, the largest margin for a presidential election since the early 1980s, giving him a strong mandate to make deep changes to policy at home and overseas.

AMLO's critics and much of the global media have portrayed AMLO as a populist, similar to Trump both for his populism and his personality.

"In the case of Mexico, obviously we share a border with them (and) this president has made very clear about building that wall and having Mexico pay for it", the aide, Kellyanne Conway, said on Fox News.

Lopez Obrador told Televisa that he will respect the current team of negotiators, and let them continue representing Mexico until he takes office December 1.
