Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani together outweigh Cristiano Ronaldo

Pepe finally breached the Uruguay defence ten minutes after the break with a powerful header following a corner to make 1-1 for Portugal.

Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 85 goals in 153 appearances, although when he plays for his country there is sometimes a feeling that he is both the problem and the solution and many perceive his goal celebrations as arrogant.

Suarez and Cavani have both found the net in three consecutive World Cups, and they have five goals between them here in Russian Federation.

The World Cup match between Uruguay and Portugal will be broadcast live on Fox.

Cristiano Ronaldo has never scored in the knockout stages of the World Cup.

At the other end is Suarez with 53 goals from 101 games but numerous controversies behind him including a nine-game global ban for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini four years ago. Portugal had 20 shots, five on frame, while Uruguay had just five shots, with three on frame, converting two.

Ahead of the highly-anticipated match, Portugal coach Fernando Santos signalled a subtle warning to his talisman to keep a check on his nerves during the match. "We've improved in possession thanks to the younger players but we haven't lost that commitment, that fight, the sacrifice and solidarity, the determination to overcome adversity".

Suarez and Ronaldo are both huge worldwide stars tasked with guiding their countries to the World Cup final.

Edinson Cavani produced the most impressive global performance of his career with two stunning goals to send Uruguay into the World Cup quarterfinals -but a second-half hamstring injury against Portugal has now left the Paris Saint-Germain striker facing a battle to be fit for Friday's last-eight matchup against France.

There has been little love lost when they have met: Ronaldo once punched Godin during a Spanish Super Cup tie, but the defender got his own back in a meeting a year ago by elbowing the Portuguese in the head.

Uruguay will advance to the quarterfinals and will face France next.

"I don't know what the match will be like", he said.
