Perhaps no other photo is in more need of a thorough caption than the one released Saturday by the office of German Chancellor Angela Merkel from the Group of Seven's annual meeting in Quebec.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel commented on the possible return of Russian Federation to the G8 format.

Many social media users began to share Merkel's, suggesting there's noticeable tension in the photo.

"Well, if they retaliate, they're making a mistake", Trump told reporters Saturday when asked about what might happen if those countries did not agree.

Merkel said there was a broad agreement among G7 leaders that tariffs and other trade barriers should be reduced.

U.S. president Donald Trump put the cat among the pigeons from the start of the G7 summit in Quebec, suggesting that former member Russian Federation should be reinstated.

Subsequently, the new Prime Minister of Italy, Giuseppe Conte supported the call trump on the return of Russian Federation to the G7.

"I think everyone knows that there will be hard discussions there", said the Chancellor, referring to the two-day G7 summit, which will start on Friday in Charlevoix in Canada's Quebec.

Soon afterwards, Trump rejected in a series of angry tweets from Air Force One the text of a G7 consensus statement - traditionally a paean to shared Western values and objectives under American leadership.

The photo was tweeted by Merkel spokesman Steffen Seibert.

And another photo taken by Mr Trudeau's official photographer Adam Scotti shows a slightly happier scene, with Mrs Merkel smiling with Mr Trump and Mr Trudeau seeming to laugh.
