According to the NYPD, at around 10.10 a.m. on Tuesday authorities were called to Spade's apartment by a housekeeper, who found Spade unresponsive. A police spokeswoman also confirmed to AFP that Kate Spade did commit suicide, but further mentioned how the exact circumstances of her death were not yet clear and they would investigate the matter.

It was reported under her birth name, Katherine Noel Brosnahan.
A KC native, Spade graduated from St. Teresa's Academy. She went on to attend the University of Kansas, and switched to Arizona State University. She was of Irish descent. She moved to NY, where she got a job in the accessories department of Mademoiselle magazine. "Even my mother said I'd gotten cocky - and what the heck was I doing giving up a job with [health] insurance?" she told Forbes in 1998. The two had worked side-by-side as salespersons in a men's clothing store, Carter's Men Shop in Phoenix. It was a luxury brand that was accessible for many people - bags tend to cost around the £100-£300 mark, making them an investment but not something completely out of reach for some.
