Red Sox to part ways with Hanley Ramirez

Selected by Boston in the second round of the 2004 June Draft, Pedroia has played his entire 12-year major league career with the Red Sox, batting.300 (1,802-for-6,000) with a.366 on-base percentage, 394 doubles, 15 triples, 140 home runs, 724 RBI, and 920 runs scored. But the victory and his return to the lineup left him in good spirits after the game.

He had a single, homer and triple Saturday and has missed the cycle by one hit three times this month and four times already this year.

"I do feel hitting J.D. fourth will help us to do more things with the top of the lineup running-wise", Cora said.

Adding Ramirez's contract to those of Pablo Sandoval (designated for assignment last July) and Rusney Castillo (with Triple-A Pawtucket), the Red Sox have roughly $45 million in dead money. Swihart allegedly can move around the diamond and play second or third, though he's only appeared in major league games at first base, left field, catcher and DH, and he's yet to prove he's more than average at any of them.

Ramirez's contract was for four years and $88 million plus the $22 million vesting option for 2019 (if Ramirez had 1,050 plate appearances over the 2017 and 2018 seasons).

They'll never say the option was a factor - a grievance from the MLBPA would surely follow - but ultimately, the Red Sox decided Ramirez wasn't worth that headache.

The finely tuned working duo of manager Alex Cora and president Dave Dombrowski are firmly in control of the Red Sox right now and for the foreseeable future.

The second reason is the Red Sox must have an vast amount of faith in Blake Swihart. I'm excited about it. First and foremost, Ramirez hadn't been doing badly this season. I was like, 'That worked.' For him to come in to come in and catch a knuckleballer after not catching since Fort Myers or whenever the last time he caught, that caught my eye. I care about him and his family. "It was a two-run game, Steven (Wright) comes in and he didn't blink".

Cora provided the cover with a perfectly plausible and rational explanation - he wanted to play Mitch Moreland more, plus he didn't think Ramirez would be happy on the bench - and Dombrowski signed the paperwork. "He needs his at-bats".

With Dustin Pedroia activated yesterday, conventional wisdom said Blake Swihart would be the corresponding roster move, not Hanley Ramirez. In those 52 seasons, the Braves outdrew the Red Sox only six times - in 1921, '25, '26, '30, '31, '32.

Dombrowski said it will be hard to trade Ramirez, so it's likely he'll be released.
