Dixon High School on lockdown after shooting

Police officials say a 19-year-old former student was shot by a school resource officer after the student opened fire at around eight this morning.

According to Dixon Police Chief Steve Howell at a press conference held earlier today, at approximately 8 a.m.an armed suspect fired several shots near the west gym. "We're lucky the officer was there", said City Administrator Danny Langloss, the father of a student who was in the gym. Dixon High School has been evacuated.

A former student was brought down by police after opening fire on his old IL high school on Wednesday morning. He said the names of the officer and the suspect are not being released.

The school resource officer confronted the suspect, who then fled from the school with the officer in pursuit, Howell said.

School resource officer Mark Dallas shot the teen.

During a chase, the shooter fired several shots at the resource officer who then returned fire, hitting the shooter.

Howell also praised the response of students and staff who followed training by sheltering in place and barricading classroom doors with bookcases and desks, Howell said.

The release reiterates the city manager's statement saying there were no injuries to students after the shooting. Amboy School District is not on any lock down. Parents were asked to come pick up their children.

The suspect was arrested and being treated for his injuries.

No one else was hurt during the shooting.

High school students are being bused from The Armory to the Page Park baseball diamonds. Police said they believe the gunman acted alone and that there was no further threat to anyone in the area.
