Huawei won't give up on the U.S. market, despite 'groundless suspicions'

One way or another, he will turn the U.S. into a viable market. Actually, while Huawei is getting hit in the pocketbook, USA consumers are missing out on the opportunity to buy the just unveiled Huawei P20 Pro with its high-end specs and a triple camera setup in back.

And if the company does manage to reverse those trends, it will still be a hard sell for US consumers after several warnings from the country's defense departments.

Huawei has been working for so long to get into the US market, but this latest road block is the biggest yet. Early this year, AT&T chose to not sell the Mate 10 Pro.

Huawei hasn't given up on the U.S. market despite facing difficulties, CEO Richard Yu told CNET in an email. Verizon has also backed away from the same deal. "We would never compromise that trust".

Huawei has brought some of the trouble on itself by using shady tactics like encouraging fans to post fake reviews on Best Buy's website for a phone that hadn't even launched.

"The security risk concerns are based on groundless suspicions and are quite frankly unfair", Yu added in his email exchange with CNET. The company has seen all hopes of distributing its smartphones in the US thwarted, be it from wireless carriers or from nationwide retailers.

Despite this, the Shenzhen-based firm past year increased its research and development spending by 17 per cent to US$13.8 billion, approaching the level of expenditure by USA giants Amazon and Alphabet, Google's parent. Calling the USA governments' talk of spying "groundless speculation", Yu says that Huawei is not giving up on the U.S. This is the company's latest experience to compete directly with Apple and Samsung in high-end devices. Huawei, being founded by a former member of the People's Liberation Army, is a keen target as a telecoms equipment producer and it was investigated back in 2011 to have breached trade sanctions by doing business with entities in Iran. The move wasn't just a blow to Huawei's Android phones, either, also encompassing the firm's laptops and wearables. To help it achieve that goal, the company hoped to partner with the two largest U.S.

Clearly, Huawei wants to get its foot in the door in this market, but officials aren't making that easy.
