Sony Music UK reported a pay gap of 4.6% (median) - better than the national average of 9.1% - with a near-equal proportion of women (75.3%) and men (74.3%) receiving a bonus.

Johnston Press, which owns over 180 titles around the United Kingdom including The News, revealed its Gender Pay Gap Report 2017 this week as part of the Government's plan to gather gender pay data from businesses with 250 or more employees.

Companies who do not provide their figures could face legal action including court orders and fines.

"We're committed to making the right changes and working towards closing this gap", she said. "The former is rightly protected by law, the latter is a variety of calculations that are more or less meaningful depending on the extent to which they compare like-for-like circumstances".

EasyJet CEO Johan Lundgren even took a pay cut this year to promote gender equality. Women's median bonus pay is also 27 per cent lower than men's.

Media and tech company Oath UK, the owner of HuffPost UK, has revealed it has a median gender pay gap of 23.29%.

The Home Office said: "Reporting gender pay gap data is not optional".

"The most important thing to come out of this is the conversation that this will provoke", Bazely said.

Harrington said: "This will need a combination of proactive steps to ensure our recruitment and retention policies further narrow the gender pay gap and provide an inclusive culture with an agile, flexible, working environment for our people".

What is the gender pay gap?

A common response to this problem has been for people to say that it's inevitable for these roles (that just so happen to be female dominated) to pay less, but historical examples show that in many cases there are sectors that pay less as a direct result of them being female dominated, rather than the other way around.

Over the next 12 months the Council will be following an action plan to try and tackle the issue.

Yorkshire Water also sponsors Forward Ladies in its research into bridging the gender pay gap in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers. On the median measure, awards pocketed by male workers were 45.7% higher than those handed out to women.
