Loyola Chicago upsets Miami on last-second shot

"Well, it's pretty simple to know why we call it March Madness", said Hurricanes coach Jim Larranaga, left holding his head in stunned disbelief after Ingram's shot.

In 2006, Larranaga took 11th-seeed George Mason to the Final Four. Instead, Miami couldn't make it past the first real day of the NCAA Tournament.

The long shot from well beyond the key came with just a split-second left, and was set up by a pass from Marques Townes.

Following a missed free throw by Miami, senior Donte Ingram drilled a three from the logo with.3 seconds remaining to give the #11 seed Ramblers a 64-62 victory. "So I came up with this goofy idea of seeing if I could be a part of the team because the NCAA doesn't have an age limit".

The biggest college basketball fan during this year's March Madness tournament is a 98-year-old nun by the name of Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, Loyola-Chicago's team chaplain. And when we were in the locker room ahead of the game, we just knew that we would do this.

Schmidt gets around in a wheelchair these days because of a broken hip that caused her to miss games this season - a rarity over almost 25 years.

SOUTH: No. 3 Tennessee (26-8) vs. Brodeur and Caleb Wood each scored 14 points for Penn (24-9). Not the quick start to the second half, nor the missed opportunities and swings-each one feeling more detrimental as the game rolled on. Coach Dan Hurley ended the win with a big embrace with guard Fatts Russell. Loyola hit 8 of 21 3s for the game. Matthews had 16 points.

The shooting guard from Chicago hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 20.8 seconds left to help the fourth-seeded Bulldogs escape a major scare with a 68-64 victory over UNC Greensboro in Boise, Idaho.

The Ramblers did not have the lead in the second half until that final basket and trailed the Hurricanes by as many as seven points, but kept the game close all afternoon. Insult to injury followed when a Lykes rebound resulted in a Huell turnover and a game-tying 3-point attempt by Custer.

The reason why Loyola-Chicago has been so unsafe this season and upset No. 6 seed Miami is because they rarely miss shots, play great team basketball, and are stingy on defense as well.

Fellow classmate Trevon Duval added 19 points and eight assists, Grayson Allen had 16 points, nine assists and four rebounds and Gary Trent supported with 16 points and six rebounds for the Blue Devils (27-7), who led 53-39 at halftime. The 47 points allowed is the fewest points that the Vols have ever surrendered in an NCAA Tournament game.

Admiral Schofield has averaged 19.6 points and 7.0 rebounds over the last five games for Tennessee.

UNLV now holds the longest streak at 1,040 games. Big South Conference Player of the Year Keyen Green scored 10 points, all in the second half. Throughout campus, screeches and cheers of "Go Blers!" could be heard for some time after the game's end.

Sister Jean has been the team's chaplain since 1994. She once said she had her girls' team played against the boys to "toughen" them. Get through this awkward opening round showdown, avoid another one-and-done scenario-like last year's outing against Michigan State. While UMBC may have been the best story of the first round, Loyola is better prepared to advance into the Sweet 16 and beyond.
