Speaking to television channels on the by-election to Radhakrishnan Nagar, Tamil Nadu Congress Chief S Thirunavukkarasar said it will be a major test for the ruling AIADMK. Bypoll to RK Nagar was cancelled due to allegations of large-scale cash distribution to voters. Also in the fray was Deepa Jayakumar, Jayalalithaa's niece, as an independent candidate.
The faction headed by the then rebel AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam had fielded senior leader E Madusudanan and the BJP named veteran Tamil film music director Gangai Amaran as its candidate.
When asked whether he thought the byelection would be held in a free and fair manner, Mr. Stalin, noting that the DMK had approached the court in the recent past, said, "Now, we will face it [the byelection] in a democratic manner, and the DMK will win it with the support of its allies". It has to be seen whether she would contest this time. "Unlike last time, EC should step in and prevent practices like bribing voters in the initial stage of election", he said.
