Though players won't represent their conferences any more, the league still plans to choose 12 players from the East and 12 from the West. For next season's 2018 All-Star Game in Los Angeles, the East and West All-Star teams are dissolved.
The 2018 NBA All-Star Game will be held in Los Angeles on February 18th.
Players and league officials have been eager to inject new interest in the often defense-absent game, and they made a decision to act after another boring affair last February in New Orleans.
"I'm thrilled with what the players and league have done to improve the All-Star, which has been a priority for all of us", NBPA President and first-year Houston Rockets guard Chris Paul said in the release. The format for selecting All-Stars is unchanged: fans, players, and media picks the starters while head coaches pick the reserves. As Zillgitt notes, the game does not have to be played with the competitiveness of a Finals game, but in recent years, the exhibition had become listless, with little defense or energy. They will select either a Los Angeles-area or national organization for donations to go. Specifics about the draft have not been detailed to this point. Fans can begin voting for All-Stars on Christmas Day.
The NBA All-Star game will take place on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018 at 8 p.m. EST. Twelve players from each conference still all earn a spot.
The number of timeouts per game has been reduced to 14 from 16, and during the last three minutes of the game, teams will be allowed just two timeouts instead of the three per team under the previous rule.
