US Missile Defense Test Hits and a Miss

The U.S. Missile Defense Agency successfully shot down a ballistic missile that was test fired early Wednesday from Kauai.

The target was a medium-range ballistic missile launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai, Hawaii.

"The number of countries with access to ballistic missile technology, including some with the potential to reach North America or target Canadian and allied deployed forces, has increased and is expected to grow and become more sophisticated", the policy says. A sailor on the USS John Paul Jones triggered a self-destruct sequence by mistake.

The latest in a series of missile tests came as South Korea and the USA conducted war games in the region.

The agency's director said the test was "a key milestone". The North warned that it will continue firing missiles into the Pacific Ocean, adding that the recent test was a "prelude" to possible strikes on or around Guam.

Due to the diplomatic efforts and sanctions failing to make headway in stopping the North Korea threat, Higbie is concerned the USA may be forced to consider the military options. That was the 15th intercept in 15 tests for the THAAD system, according to the MDA.

The destroyer fired a Standard Missile-6 or SM-6 interceptor.

In May, the USA, in the first test of its ground-based intercept system at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, intercepted an intercontinental ballistic missile launched from the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site on Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, which is 4,200 miles away.
