"The Club will support Vontaze in the appeal process".

The hit appears to be a legal one and should not have resulted in a suspension.

Schefter added that Burfict is appealing the suspension and will have a hearing next week.

"The rules say you can eliminate a receiver within five yards of the line of scrimmage as long as you don't hit him in the head and I don't think I hit him in the head", Burfict said.

Burfict hits Sherman in the chest while leading with his shoulder and does not leave his feet in order to do so. I helped him up and he said he was good and I asked if he was good on the next series and he said, "Yeah, that was a legal hit'".

When on the field, Burfict is an impact player in the Bengals defense.

But the offending player - Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict - has been disciplined many times in the past. Burfict is entering the past year of his contract and is scheduled to become a free agent after this season. The Bengals will also be without cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones for the season opener against Baltimore.

Burfict had an interception return for a touchdown during Cincinnati's 23-17 preseason loss at Washington on Sunday.

The hit on Sherman came as the fullback was coming out of the backfield, however, Burfict was not penalised on the play.

Burfict was suspended from the first three games of the 2016 season for numerous violations, including an illegal hit on the Steelers' Antonio Brown. Burfict has looked outstanding in preseason games after reporting to camp in the best shape of his life.

While Burfict's hit was probably unnecessary, it could be argued that the hit itself was clean.
