Who the Hurricanes could lose in the National Hockey League expansion draft

On that night, the Vegas Golden Knights first roster in franchise history will be made public.

When Commissioner Gary Bettman officially announced the NHL's first expansion team since 2000 would be based in Las Vegas, Nevada nearly a year ago, the idea of hockey mixed with the glitz and glamour of the desert may have been hard to believe. They can protect seven forwards, three defenseman and one goaltender (7-3-1) or eight skaters and one goaltender.

The unprotected list includes players eligible to become restricted or unrestricted free agents, which the Golden Knights have the option to sign over the next three days.

"That's really one of the things we wanted to leverage", Treliving said.

The Golden Knights must submit their 30 selections - one player from each team - by 10am et Wednesday.

The only real question on this list came with Jurco, whom we predict the Blackhawks will protect over Dennis Rasmussen.

The NHL announced Sunday the players that each of the league's 30 existing teams has protected in the expansion draft and which players each team has made available to the Las Vegas Golden Knights.

In addition, the Vegas front office owns a lot of bargaining power in being able to offer not to select certain players in exchange for different assets. Goalie Jeff Glass is under contract for next season and fulfills the requirement for exposed goaltenders.

Instead, the Knights would pick from forward Matt Calvert, defenseman Ryan Murray and center William Karlsson.

Thornton had a cap hit of $6.8 million and Marleau $6.7 million in the last of three-year deals. Simply put, that's the smartest strategy for Pittsburgh to take due to not having much defensive depth in the organization, and a bevy of veteran free agents (Trevor Daley, Ron Hainsey, Mark Streit) that are not expected to return to the team next season.

But more prominent names figure to be on the horizon for Vegas thanks to the expansion draft. Brodziak and Jaskin are players the Blues would certainly love to retain, but could be nice pieces for the Golden Knights to snag to fill immediate roles on the inaugural team.

There's also nothing barring Vegas from making deals to select a player and trade him to another team.

Nevertheless, that doesn't mean the draft is meaningless, it is in many ways a good indication of the type and quality of talent that teams are bringing in.

The NHL Expansion Draft will take place on Tuesday, and teams had to submit their list of protected players to the league on Saturday afternoon.

"It had all the feelings of a trade deadline, but there was conditions", Flames GM Brad Treliving said by phone. Among the juicier ones: The Tennessean's Adam Vignan reports that the Nashville Predators might protect Calle Jarnkrok, potentially exposing James Neal.

The NHL's roster freeze kicks in today at 3pm ET, upon which teams can not finalize trades with one another until June 22 at 8am ET. Smirnov finished last season with 47 points in 39 games to the tune of 28 assists and 19 goals. Youngsters Connor McDavid and Darnell Nurse don't meet the minimum pro experience criteria, so they're automatically protected and don't need to be exposed.
