"You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!" he said in an early morning tweet.

Trump's Twitter response followed days of intensifying criticism of Mueller from some conservatives who have charged the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director and his team with political bias and have claimed his relationship to Comey and an earlier meeting with Trump amount to conflicts of interest. An official of Trump's transition confirmed the laywer's internal order sent Thursday.

Associate Attorney General Rachel Brand will oversee the Department of Justice probe into Russian Federation meddling in US elections if Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein recuses himself from the investigation, Axios reported Friday. Jake [Tapper], Roger Stone, the president's longtime friend and associate told CNN Money earlier today this, "I'd fire Mueller and Rosenstein for wasting the taxpayer's money".

Rosenstein had written to Trump recommending Comey's firing.

Mueller is the person Rosenstein appointed to lead the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

The BBC reports that Deputy Attorney General, Rod Rosenstein, wrote a memo the White House used to justify the firing of the ex-FBI chief.

A close Trump associate said this week the president was considering firing Mueller, although the White House later denied it.

The preservation order covers any information involving Russian Federation or Ukraine, and records on former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort, former foreign policy adviser Carter Page, business partner Rick Gates, informal adviser and friend Roger Stone, and Flynn, according to a memo obtained by the Times. The move by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III to investigate Trump's conduct marks a major turning point in the almost year-old FBI investigation, which until recently focused on Russian meddling during the presidential campaign and on whether there was any coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin.

The Post reports the other members include: 'former national security adviser Michael Flynn, former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Carter Page, who was listed as a foreign-policy adviser for the campaign'.

Vice President Mike Pence has also hired a private lawyer to represent his interests in the expanding probe.

The transition official said the organization has also separately asked the General Services Administration to preserve records from the Trump transition that were transferred to its facilities after the inauguration. The transition, a nonprofit structurally separate from the Trump campaign, continues to operate with a small staff.

Although USA Today also noted that the tweet came shortly after a Washington Post report that Mueller's team is also investigating Trump son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner's business dealings.

He said: "I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!" Both stories cited unnamed sources. "President Trump said prior that once he gets in he's going to kick the S-H-I-T out of the enemy".

In a second tweet, Trump touted his "powerful" presence on social media, despite widespread criticism that his recurring rants on Twitter and other online media have only compounded his legal and political problems.
