Texas Senate revives trying to limit abortion coverage

It likely will have to negotiate details with the Senate before getting the governor's signature.

Texas Republicans have been pushing an aggressive agenda despite the promise of court challenges, with time running out to get bills to GOP Gov. Greg Abbott's desk. If it becomes law, Texas would be the only state with a statute restricting bathrooms for transgender schoolchildren. The Senate's version included schools and government buildings, but the House's version focuses on schools only.

"For those who care about unfunded mandates, if a school district or open enrollment [faces a lawsuit], it requires the state attorney general to defend them", Paddie said.

"I think it's absolutely about school safety", state Rep. Chris Paddie, R, said Sunday night. "If a proposal that is discriminatory or inconsistent with our values were to become law there, that would certainly be a factor considered when thinking about awarding future events", announced National Football League spokesman Brian McCarthy.

However, a separate provision of the Voting Rights Act says that states that are found to have passed laws with intent to discriminate can be subjected to the pre-clearance regime. He said, "That could be because you're transgender, that could be because you're shy". "America has long recognized that separate but equal is not equal at all".

Texas is to pass a "bathroom bill" that will ban transgender students from using the restroom that aligns with their gender identity.

In a statement released ahead of the House vote, Jennifer Pizer of Lambda Legal said the LGBT legal advocacy group would "be on the case before the next school bell rings" if Texas lawmakers "forced discrimination into Texas law". Straus now claims that the amended measure, limited to public schools, would allow the state to avoid boycotts that were so costly to North Carolina. That bill resulted in large economic losses for the state and has since been repealed.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas Republicans have been pushing an aggressive agenda despite promised court challenges, including legislation that would let police ask drivers whether they're in the USA legally, restrict what school bathrooms transgender students can use, ban most second-trimester abortions and let adoption agencies reject gay couples over religious objections. This year, the Trump administration rescinded the guidance. It does allow those students to use a multi-occupancy bathroom if no one else is using it.

Rachel Adams Gonzalez, whose 7-year-old daughter Libby is transgender and attends a Dallas elementary school, watched the House action from her home as she washed dishes after dinner Sunday evening.

"There is no moral middle ground on discrimination, " said Kathy Miller, president of the civil liberties advocacy group Texas Freedom Network. Senators passed a bill that could keep transgender kids out of high school sports.

It's a measure that would override existing trans-inclusive policies at some school districts that allow transgender children to use the bathroom of their choice. Democrats and other child advocates, however, argue that will only increase school bullying and discrimination.

"There's no denying that religious agencies in Texas will take advantage of the law, too", Durso says.

Patrick, who had threatened to do what he could to force a special session if transgender bathroom prohibitions were not passed into law, declared himself unimpressed with the House effort.
