Tech-heavy EV maker and energy storage vendor Tesla purchased SolarCity, comfortably one of the US' top three solar installers, for around US$2.6 billion a year ago.

Rive told Reuters that he's more interested in "starting and running companies", but it's also true that Tesla has changed its strategy regarding installations on homes, which definitely impacts Rive's original vision of providing a means to get to low-priced, widespread distribution of aftermarket installations for everyday people.

Tesla's acquisition of SolarCity is an important part of creating this future. Rive had served as head of sales and services in Tesla's energy division since a year ago.

Something tells us whatever company Rive starts will once again end up being generously subsidized by taxpayers.

Rive's responsibilities will be distributed among Tesla leadership, Tesla said.

The typical homeowner can expect to pay 21.85 dollars per square foot for Solar Roof, and consumers in the United States can now place their orders, the company said.

"I can hand off the baton to somebody else and give myself the opportunity to do something else that could also have another impact", he said.

The general point being made is that, without Mobileye's tech - Hardware 2.0 vehicles are all Tesla, no Mobileye input - the company can't deliver. Apple is said to be joining the bandwagon soon. Tesla just started taking orders for a new product, the Solar Roof, which was first presented as a key element of a three-part solution, including also energy storage and electric cars.

A Tesla Solar Roof for a home needing 3,000 square feet of roofing would cost more than $65,000 if 35% of the tiles were solar.
