The Manchester United and England captain has struggled for first-team games under Jose Mourinho this season, although he has been handed slightly more minutes in recent games.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has suggested to Football.London that Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney could join Everton in the summer transfer window.

Gomes took to social media after the game to thank supporters for such a warm reception, noting that playing at Old Trafford was a "dream come true".

In doing so, Gomes not only became the youngest player in the history of the club, he became the youngest player in the history of the Premier League.

Rooney still has two years left on his United contract but was heavily linked with a lucrative move to China earlier this year, while Everton also expressed interest in sealing a return.

"You hope [he doesn't leave] but the way the season's gone, particularly since Christmas, he's not been involved as much as he would probably have liked".

The attacking midfielder is now United's youngest ever player aged just 16 years and 263 days.

"It looks like he is on his way out of Manchester United and it happens towards the end of your time".

Rooney has been with Manchester United since 2004 after he joined from Everton, and is now on 253 goals across all competitions which makes him the club's top goalscorer of all time.

It would be a big surprise if Gomes was actually handed Rooney's number 10 shirt for the 2017-18 campaign, but there is every reason to believe that the teenager could be a future star at Old Trafford.
