Nora Pouillon, creator of Restaurant Nora, received the 2017 James Beard Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award.

Even without a win, the James Beard Foundation nomination proves San Antonio's culinary scene is on the rise.

Caracol opened in 2013 as a coastal kitchen to celebrate "seafood found along Mexico's 16 coastal states". In the "Best Chef Northwest" category, Seattle finalists Edouardo Jordan (Salare and JuneBaby) and Rachel Yang and Seif Chirchi (Joule, Revel, and Trove and Portland's Revelry) lost to Portland's Greg Denton and Gabrielle Quiñónez Denton of Ox. Stephen Starr's Le Coucou in New York City was named Best New Restaurant.

Along with their manager, Arlin Smith, Wiley and Taylor own and operate Eventide Oyster Co., The Honey Paw, and Hugo's.

Delaware's Sam Calagione, of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Milton, also snagged top honors this year, for Outstanding Wine, Beer, or Spirits Professional. This year's host was actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson of the TV sitcom "Modern Family".
