Then she looked over from the line at the Chi'Lantro food truck and saw a man standing with a knife "that looked like a small machete".

Manley said during the confrontation, the victim suffered a stab wound to his lower leg, went home and asked his roommates to take him to St. David's Hospital, where APD was contacted. "There's nothing I can think of that would even slightly indicate that he was a violent person".

In a matter of minutes, UT police say, biology junior Kendrex J. White, 21, stabbed four students - killing one and injuring three.

Former high school classmates of the 21-year-old suspect in a deadly stabbing rampage at the University of Texas are expressing shock about the incident.

Student Ray Arredondo was walking to his vehicle, he said, when panicked people began running toward him.

"Let us make it impossible for the administration and frats to simply wait out the occasional uproar, and let us constantly agitate against them and make their lives hell". But the university police said the building was not under lockdown and is open.

At least one person has died and three others have been injured, according to Austin EMS.

A university police officer responded to the scene around 1:50 p.m. local time, less than two minutes after receiving the emergency call. White is suspected of stabbing four UT students Monday, one of them fatally.

Police were trying to determine if the assailant had a motive or randomly picked victims along the bustling walkway outside of Gregory Gymnasium in East Campus during the final week of spring classes. "Get out of here!'" Arredondo said.

Nearer to Jester Center, Arredondo photographed an officer taking White into custody.

The suspect is described as a white man in his 20s. "He was not struggling".

The University officials said they have cancelled classes and events on the campus for the rest of the days. "This was not a person that had a vendetta against any one particular group". "That fear is very understandable, especially in light of recent vandalism and threats against students", he said.

As police continued to gather evidence, he said he still feels safe.

White recently had been involuntarily committed and later released in another city, according to Carter, who provided no other details. Watch the press conference below. "It would be premature to indicate or suggest one thing or another".

A student who said he knows White socially, William Verastegui, said the suspect had always seemed friendly.

But White recently missed almost a month of Spanish class, Springer said, and it seemed like something was wrong.

He said White will be charged with murder and several counts of aggravated assault.
