A week for recognizing mental health

With 1 in 6 adults and 1 in 10 children in the United Kingdom having a mental health condition at any given time, rising to 1 in 4 people over the course of their lifetime, it is unarguable that steps must be taken to improve access to mental health support, and tackle stigma around poor mental health.

May is Mental Health Month and calls attention to strategies and approaches that help all Americans achieve wellness and good mental and overall health. We should never forget that behind every mental health case is not an abstract statistic to be tossed around, but a real, vulnerable human being, often with a family, struggling for a genuine solution to the problem oppressing them. "Without the security and freedom provided by these rights, it is very hard to maintain a high level of mental health", according to WHO.

Third, universal screenings for mental health conditions must become as common in schools as the current screenings for vision, hearing and academic impairments.

How can we use our Emotional Health to improve our Mental Health? This will include developing and providing quality education and training resources; policy, legislative, and best practice advocacy; connections between employers and providers; and a community of practice for employers committed to systems change in their own organizations and the external environment.

The mental health conversation benefits everyone.

The truth is that whilst nobody is immune from mental illness, people living in poverty are at a much higher risk.

Do they have a good working hour culture? This means employers can not treat employees less favourably due to their mental health. No two are the same.

A recent study quizzing 2,000 Brits on the state of their mental well-being revealed that when it comes to boosting mental health, it's our friends and family that are most likely to help us out.

Say no to things that may be affecting your mental health. I paused and replied, "You're correct". When we learn the facts we can help others to dispel false ideas about mental health conditions.

This resulted in a conversation where I taught this senior decision maker how mental illness affects both emotions and cognitions. It affects people of all ages, races and walks of life. They have also announced a pledge to train a teacher in every primary and secondary school in mental-health first aid, to help identify children who are suffering from anxiety and depression.

An initial way to help fight mental health stigma, and in turn encourage people to get the help they need, is through information. It needs the right nurturing and support to heal.

Growing concern about the mental health of children in this country deserves to be reflected in the manifestos, so full marks to Mrs May for addressing the issue of mental health.

Forming positive relationships is key for preventing mental health problems and providing a source of support during adversity.
