A strong field, an unpredictable course at Players

- A year ago, Jason Day went wire-to-wire to win the Players Championship. It's just golf at the end of the day. He has three wins on the year with a total of seven top-10 finishes in eight events.

Since The Players was launched in 1974, there has been at least one repeat victor in the four major championships. Graham DeLaet (+14800 & +210) had a sixth-place finish the week after the Masters at the RBC Heritage in his last start. None have even come close, with three players - Jack Nicklaus in 1977, Mark McCumber in 1989 and Adam Scott in 2005 - tying the record among defenders for coming the closest to the eventual victor, four shots.

2012: Matt Kuchar. Much like Clark in 2010. It goes on and on.

"I thought Oh my god", Orrico said. So that became impossible. Responsible for some awesome wins as well as a few disastrous endings, just ask Sean O'Hair and Sergio Garcia!

More evidence of how the Players winners have struggled the following year can be found in their scoring averages. "I'm laying up up every day". But that's not to say the tour isn't looking at improving pace of play.

Rickie Fowler 5 points each way at 18/1 with Bet On Brazil - He won here in 2015 and although he missed the cut last season he has been playing really solid this year and with a win already under his belt. The front-right you have the potential to putt it up there close, but it's just the back-left you can get it up there and miss it right, and even if you're in the rough or the bunkers or whatever, you can get it close to the hole and therefore I think the risk is worth it because you can drive it on to the middle of the green.

"For a moment there after I lost my number one world ranking, I kind of lost the desire to be there, and I think it was just because I was mentally burnt out from everything that had gone on", said Day.

"That just goes to show you how hard it is to come back and play this golf course, because it does test every aspect of your game, not only the physical part but the mental part, as well, and if you don't come into a golf course like this sharp in both areas, then it will really unfold out there".

Dustin Johnson hits from the second tee during the first round of The Players Championship golf tournament Thursday, May 11, 2017, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

"It's also the day I was married", said McIlroy, who married Erica Stoll on April 22. "If I were playing the EA Sports video game, I would probably play with them over myself".

"The way the hole's structured, if I hit a draw and it lands towards the middle or left half of the green, it can go in the water very easily".

"I feel very confident about the progress I've made in my short game and especially my putting over the last couple of weeks to get ready for this", he said.

"By having greens on the range, you can see how the ball reacts", Blixt said. "He's won four majors and more tournaments than the rest of us ... nearly combined".

Ten of the first 11 Players champions made the cut, with Jerry Pate unable to play in 1983 because of a back injury. I feel like if I'm going to play well here this is the time I will play well here.

Also, all 18 greens were replaced with TifEagle Bermuda grass, with two new greens added to the practice area, which was expanded with input from three-time PGA Tour victor Jonas Blixt of Sweden.

Louis Oosthuizen: He won the British Open in 2015 and almost made it two in a row at St Andrews in 2015 when he missed out in a play-off to Zach Johnson, but his only other close-call came at the Masters in 2012, where he lost to Bubba Watson in a play-off. And then the FedExCup run would be a little bit earlier and the playoff run and it would mean it wouldn't clash with football, which is obviously a huge thing, as well, with TV ratings.

"I've definitely limited the amount of drivers I've hit".
